Illness
A student who has had a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting must be free of symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school. A physician's note is needed for your student’s absence to be excused. Please contact your students' attendance office for further information. When students are sent to the clinic by their teacher, they are evaluated in the clinic and given first aid care as needed. Parents are called because sick students will need to be picked up as soon as possible, and all students who become ill at school must be dismissed through the nurse’s office.

Medication Policy
Flagler Schools policy prohibits students from carrying any medication to school, from school, or during school. This policy includes cough drops, sunscreen, eye drops, lozenges, skin creams, and non-prescription and prescription medications. Therefore, all medications must be brought to school by a parent/guardian accompanied by the correct paperwork from the physician. Medication brought to school by a student cannot be administered Medication cannot be returned to the student to take home. Unauthorized medication will be taken and disposed of. Each medicine must be in its original container and must match the doctor’s order exactly.
Epi-Pens, prescription inhalers, diabetic medications and supplies, and pancreatic enzymes may be carried by the student with a written authorization by the parent and physician. The parent/guardian must complete appropriate paperwork with the school nurse prior to the student carrying these items.

No student is allowed to carry any kind of medication to or from school. If a student needs to have medication during school hours, a parent/guardian will need to bring the medication to the school clinic and complete the appropriated paperwork. Any changes in medication must be in writing and brought to the clinic. This includes any over the counter medications (Tylenol, Advil) cough drops, antacids, etc. Students are allowed to carry inhalers with a doctor's note.

Issuance of Non-Prescription First Aid Medication by School Health Personnel in Flagler Schools
Under the supervision of the FCSD medical director and the approval of the Superintendent and FCSB, the nurse in your child’s school is able to provide your child additional first aid treatment with your permission. No student will be given any medication without a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian. The following non-prescription first aid treatments have been approved for use in the Flagler Schools with parental permission:
  • Minor wound care (cuts, scrapes, and abrasions): vaseline, alcohol, triple antibiotic ointment, bacitracin
  • Minor eye irritation: sterile eye wash
  • Minor bites and stings: sting relief pad, calamine lotion, 1% hydrocortisone cream
  • Minor upset stomach and indigestion: ginger ale, juice, and crackers

Lice Policy
Flagler Schools has a “no nit” policy. Students are excused for the day when a school nurse or administrator sends them home due to the discovery of lice and/or nits. If needed, the student may be excused for three additional days while the parent/guardian attempts to rid the student of the lice/nits. These three days do not count against the ten parent notes a parent may write. If lice/nits continue to be a concern for a student repeatedly, the parent may be referred for additional services.
